About Simon

From a single taste at a Townsville markets to one of WA's most passionate dragon fruit collections.

Growing dragon fruit in Western Australia

Western Australia's warm, dry climate is well-suited to dragon fruit. Long summers, low humidity, and excellent sunlight hours mean the plants thrive here — but success still depends on getting the basics right.

Simon has been growing dragon fruit at Champion Lakes for years, testing varieties, refining techniques, and learning what actually works in WA conditions. These notes are drawn directly from that experience — practical, honest, and written for growers at every level, from backyard hobbyists to those looking to establish a serious collection.

One taste changed everything

Simon's journey with dragon fruit began in 2015 when he reconnected with an old school friend, Anthony, in Townsville. At a farmers market on the Strand, Simon tried his very first red dragon fruit — Hylocereus Polyrhizus — and was hooked. The kids were not quite as impressed, but Simon's mind was made up: the journey had begun.

After a few years of collecting, Simon decided to get more serious. Simon's Dragon Fruit Facebook page was born in November 2020. By September 2021, after outgrowing the backyard, he purchased a 3/4 acre block in Champion Lakes, Western Australia, and began moving the collection there.

Today the Champion Lakes property is home to over 100 varieties of dragon fruit, plus a growing collection of other fruit trees — star fruit, mulberries, citrus, mangoes, black sapote, custard apple, jackfruit, and more. From established favourites to Simon's own hand-crafted hybrids, every variety is grown with the same care and curiosity that started it all.
